Kenny Elissondo Pure climbers are like artists.

Kenny Elissondo will switch his Team Ineos colors to Trek-Segafredo red and white in 2020, hoping to use his pure climbing skills to attack in the mountains again, as he did early in his career when he won the Vuelta a España Angliru.

The 28-year-old Frenchman has spent the past three seasons in purely domestic roles with Team Sky and Team Ineos. When he's not supporting Richie Porte and Vincenzo Nibali, he's clearly ready to express himself.

"I'm a climber, so I like to attack on high mountains. Sometimes I had the legs to attack, but because of the race plan I had to work for the others. Domestique is a noble role, but I also like to attack. Elissondo trained with his new teammates at the Trek-Segafredo camp in Sicily, preparing for his debut race with Porte at the 2020 Tour Down Under.

"When I moved to Sky in 2017, I knew where I was going and that my role would change. I have no regrets about running with Team Sky and Team Ineos. I don't care what people say about the team, it's a great team to learn and improve on many things.

"I wanted it to be a good domestique and I think it was.

Elizondo forgives Team Ineos for bringing him to Spain for the Vuelta a España and choosing David de la Cruz on the last day before the start. He has not raced since the Vuelta a Burgos in mid-August and is hungry to race again in the Tour Down Under and make his debut in the 2020 Tour de France.

"As a French rider and having never raced in the Tour, it's a big goal for me. I live in Nice and the Tour starts in Nice, so it will be special," he explained.

"I've also won a stage at the Vuelta a España, so I want to run both the Tour and the Vuelta.

Above all, Elissondo wants the freedom to express himself in the high mountains.

"I love to climb and I think pure climbers are artists. We are different, we love to suffer on climbs and spend a lot of time in the mountains. We wait for the moment to attack, and if we are good enough, we can do something special...I want to experience that emotion again in 2020."

Perhaps he is already imagining attacking in the Tour de France.

"The tempo in modern cycling is very fast and often controlled by teams like Ineos, which makes it harder for pure climbers. But it is important to try to attack. I live to attack in the mountains

"It's different for the GC men because they have a lot to lose and they have a team to help them and they have to ride for that team, and GC athletes can't take too many risks or make mistakes. But as a pure climber, you're not tied to those chains."

Elizondo reveals that he secretly admires Mikel Landa and the Basque rider's ability to go on the attack with little regard for the outcome. Landa's move to Bahrain McLaren and team leader at the Tour de France marked a departure from Movistar's team tactics.

It would not surprise me if Elissondo joins Landa's attack in the high mountains in July.

"I like Mikel Landa because he is not afraid to attack and blow up the race. He's a pure climber who also goes for the GC. Fans love #FreeLanda and "Landismo" because he attacks without fear of the wind, and I hope to find my inner Ellison Desmo in 2020."
