Mathieu Van der Pol's Corendon-Circus (open in new tab) team (open in new tab) has changed its name and rebranded as Alpecin-Fenix for the 2020 season. The new sponsor had been rumored for several weeks and was confirmed on New Year's Day before Van der Pol competed in the DVV Verzekeringen trofee GP Sven Nys cyclocross race in new colors.
The Dutch team, run by Philip and Christoph Roodhooft, will wear navy blue kit made by Kalas as it moves up to the Professional Continental ranks in 2020.
Shampoo brand Alpecin continues its involvement in cycling after sponsoring the Katusha (open in new tab) team for the past two years. Meanwhile, Italian interior materials brand Phoenix, owned by Dutch company Broadview Holding, will join as co-title sponsor; Canyon will remain as bike sponsor and will have its logo on the shorts.
"We are really pleased to continue our collaboration with Alpecin Phoenix as bike sponsor and partner," said Roman Arnold, head of Canyon. [From the beginning, we have believed in Philippe and Christophe Roudoft's vision of creating a competitive team in multiple disciplines. And to have the incomparable Mathieu Van Der Pol competing in Canyon Bicycle in on-road, off-road, and cyclocross is simply incredible. I can't wait for the Alpecin Phoenix season"
.
In 2020, everything will change for the team. Previously a cyclo-cross-centric team with a limited road program, Alpecin-Phoenix has acquired a Pro Conti license and significantly strengthened its roster.
Van der Pol will continue to race cyclocross in the first few months of the year and will be aiming for mountain bike gold at the Tokyo Olympics, but the Dutch sensation will increase its road schedule after a breakthrough year in 2019.
The 24-year-old, who won the Amstel Gold Race, Doir door Fraunderen, and Brabantspijl in his spring debut, will focus on the classics.
The team has been acquiring a number of new road contenders, including Sacha Modolo, Petr Vakoc, Kristijan Svaragli, and Scott Thwaites.
