Peter Sagan starts 2020 season at Vuelta a San Juan

Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) will celebrate his 30th birthday on January 26 and will take on his first race of the 2020 season in the opening stage of the Vuelta a San Juan, which runs through February 2.

This will be Sagan's second appearance in an Argentine race since his debut a year ago, when he had already competed and won the Tour Down Under in Australia. Sagan has competed in the Tour de San Luis in Argentina three times. Sagan's 2020 calendar will continue to include the classics and the Tour de France, with the Giro d'Italia and the Tokyo Olympics added to the program. [I am happy to return to Argentina and start the new season with the Vuelta a San Juan, a race that has left me with beautiful memories in 2019," Sagan said in a statement released on Saturday.

A year ago, Sagan had consistent results in Argentina, but failed to win at Punta Negra, finishing third behind Julian Alaphilippe, and second behind Fernando Gaviria at Vila San Agustin.

"We know that the Vuelta a San Juan will once again have a great list of participants and that the bar will be very high. And I know that the route will be interesting, but the support of the thousands of fans who will welcome me will make everything a little easier.

The seven stages of the race will be separated by a rest day on January 30, when Sagan will participate in the Sagan Fondo, a sports race in the province of San Juan, where he will meet with Argentine fans.

"[Sportive] is the big news of the year for me," Sagan said. "It will be a chance to enjoy a run with my fans."

"I'm really looking forward to it," he said.

After the race in Argentina, Sagan will train at altitude in February and return at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Strade Bianche and Tirreno-Adriatico are also scheduled for the first round of the Monumento in Milan-San Remo.

The 2020 Vuelta a San Juan peloton includes Julian Alaphilippe, Remco Evenpole (Detunink-Quickstep), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates), and Italian National Team Filippo Ganna will participate.
