Enrico Battaglin has signed with Bahrain McLaren for the 2020 season. The Italian, who spent last season with Katusha Alpecin, was rumored to be on the move to Bahrain McLaren over the winter and attended a training camp in Croatia in December.
Battaglin announced his move to Bahrain McLaren on social media Friday afternoon, with his new team confirming that he is the 29th and last player to join their 2020 roster.
"I am excited to join Team Bahrain McLaren," Battargin wrote on Instagram. 'The 2019 season was not my best year and I want to get back to the top level next season. Team Bahrain McLaren is the perfect team for me and I look forward to being part of the family and bringing success to my teammates and staff."
Battaglin turned pro in 2012 with Bardiani-CSF (then Colnago-CSF) and then in 2016 He was promoted to the World Tour level with Lotto NL-Jumbo. After three seasons with a Dutch team, he joined Katusha-Alpecin in 2019, but was left without a team following a merger with the Israel Cycling Academy.
A strong puncher, Battaglin has won three Giro d'Italia stages throughout his career: in 2013, he won an uphill sprint in the rain at Serra San Bruno, and 12 months later he kicked off a breakaway group in the summit finish at Oropa; in 2018 won the uphill finish of Santa Ninfa in Sicily.
"Enrico Battaglin completes the 29-man selection," Bahrain McLaren director Rod Ellingworth said in a statement. Rod Ellingworth, manager of Bahrain McLaren, issued a statement saying, "We are delighted to have Enrico Battaglin as our newest member of the team. We look forward to further developing his potential."
Bahrain McLaren has significantly revised its roster for the 2020 season following Vincenzo Nibali's move to Trek Segafredo. Ellingworth was named team manager, with new additions Mikel Landa, Wout Poels, and Mark Cavendish.
