Israel's Startup Nation has announced the seven athletes who will represent the country at the 2020 Tour Down Under in Adelaide, Australia, later this month. British time trial champion Alex Dowsett, sprinters Andre Greipel and Rick Zabel, and climbers Ben Hellmans and James Piccoli are among the names.
Greipel, a two-time Tour Down Under winner with a record of 18 stage wins, was announced last week, but the confirmation of the six teammates who will join him gives an idea of what to expect from the Israeli team.
Either Greipel or Zabel (probably both) will be focused on stage wins, and the team will likely add Doucet to the sprint train, although there will be no time trial.
Hermans, the 2019 Tour of Utah winner, and Piccoli, the Canadian climber who finished second overall at the event and is new to the team this year, are both likely to be in the mix regarding the overall title, which will be determined by climbing Willunga Hill twice on January 26. [The team will consist of Israel's Omer Goldstein and Canada's Guillaume Boivin.
Meanwhile, the Polish CCC team is the first WorldTour team to arrive in Adelaide on Sunday and will begin a two-week training camp in preparation for the race.
AG2R La Mondiale leader Romain Bardet has already arrived in Australia and is expected to be acclimatizing to the heat, and there are other big names in the World Tour stage races, such as Elia Viviani, who has signed with Cofidis, Road Racing World Champion Mads Pedersen and Trek-Segafredo teammate and 2017 winner Richie Porte, and defending champion Daryl Impey, Mitchelton Scott teammate and 2018 Vuelta a EspaƱa winner He will be joined by Simon Yates.
