Despite earlier claims that he will skip the 2020 Giro d'Italia, Elia Viviani will indeed ride the Corsa Rosa and take on the Tour de France.
Viviani's new team, Cofidis, held a team presentation near Roubaix on Friday evening, ready to start life on the World Tour. The race program for the team's key riders, including Viviani, Guillaume Martin, and Christophe Laporte, was presented.
Viviani, who has competed in six of the last seven Giro's, had said in November that he would skip the race in 2020. However, the Giro was included in his tentative schedule on Friday.
The European road racing champion will begin his campaign at the end of the month at the Tour Down Under and will be in Australia for the Towers Zero Race Torquay and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. He will then travel to Europe for the Tour of Oman, followed by the Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo, one of his main targets this season.
From there, he heads to Belgium to compete in cobbled classics such as De Panne, Ghent-Wevelgem, Dwars door Hlaanderen, and Tour of Flanders. After a rest, he will race in Eschborn-Frankfurt in early May before heading to Budapest for the start of the Giro on May 9. He will then race the Tour de Suisse before heading to the Tour de France, where he will be looking for Cofidis' first stage win in over a decade.
Viviani then turns to the track to defend the Olympic omnium title he won in Rio four years ago. It is doubtful that Viviani will be able to finish both the Giro and the Tour. As for the Tour, the final stage will take place on July 19, two and a half weeks before the first round of the omnium, which will be held in Tokyo on August 6.
"We embark on this season with great enthusiasm. Cofidis is one of the most prestigious teams and we will do our best to lift its colors high," Viviani said in a statement from the team.
"We know from experience the importance of starting the season well. We must not prioritize and must treat each race as an objective in its own right. We need to instill a winning mentality every time we go to the start of a race."
In 2020, Cofidis will return to the top class of cycling and Viviani will help the team win races at the highest level. He brought in Fabio Sabatini from Deceuninck-Quick Step and Simone Consonni from UAE Team Emirates, and the team also signed French climber Guillaume Martin from Wanty Gobert and Belgian climber Julien The team also signed French climber Guillaume Martin from Wanty Gobert and Belgian climber Julien Vermote from Dimension Data.
The team has also signed two new climbers: sprinter Christophe Laporte, who won nine races last year, and Jesús Herrada, winner of stages at the Tour of Luxembourg, the Mont Ventoux Challenge, and the Vuelta a España.
"Our team looks strong," said team manager Cedric Vasseur. 'We are made up of big talent that is capable of winning. Everyone is ready to take on this great challenge and win the jersey."
While Viviani has his sights set on the Tour de France sprint, Martín leads the overall contenders with 12th place this year. The 26-year-old will start his season at the Vuelta a San Juan later this month, followed by Paris-Nice, Ituria-Basque, La Flèche Wallonne, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The Criterium du Dauphiné will be the preparatory race for the Tour.
"To make it to the World Tour is every rider's dream and you have to get used to that level," said Martin. I will do everything I can to keep improving and to try to win stage races and one-day races. "
Laporte will also compete in the Tour de France after the Tour de Suisse and will complete a full program of spring classics, while Elada will focus on the Giro and Vuelta after the Tour of Oman, UAE Tour, Basque and Ardennes Classics.
