Esteban Chavez (Mitchelton Scott) will compete in both the time trial and road race at the Colombian National Championships on January 30 and February 2, followed by the Tour Colombia 2.1 with the national team from February 11-16, 2020 He will start the 2020 season in his hometown.
Chaves said he is ready to bring more results after a successful 2019 campaign.
"I'm really looking forward to starting the new season," Chaves said in a team press release. Chaves has been plagued by injuries and illness in recent years; a virus forced him to miss most of the 2018 season, but he returned last year, winning a mountain stage at the Giro d'Italia. Chaves now hopes to build on that success in 2020 by taking on new opportunities.
"I am very happy because this will be my first All-Japan championship as a professional rider and I want to race in the colors of the team," Chaves said.
The championships will be held in Boyaca, where Chaves will compete in the time trial on January 30 and the road race on February 2.
"The circuit is really, really tough, it's over 200km, there are a lot of hills and a lot of elevation," Chavez said.
"There might be a chance to go for the jersey, but there are a lot of strong riders from strong teams here. But I'm going to be ready and anything can happen."Chaves will then compete in the Tour Colombia 2.1 stage with the Colombian national team.
"I'm pretty excited because it's my first Tour of Colombia too, and this year the race ends on a local and training road," Chaves said. 'I know the last two stages like the back of my hand.'

The Tour Colombia 2.1 will start on Tuesday, February 11 with a 16.7km individual time trial in Tunja. Stage 2 is 152.4 km from Pipa to Duitama; Pipa will be the starting point for the 177.7 km third stage that will finish in Sogamoso. Stage 4 is 168.6 km from Pipa to Santa Rosa de Viterbo, followed by stage 5, 175 km from Pipa to Zipaquira, before the race concludes on Sunday, February 16 with a final 182.6 km stage from Zipaquira to the Alto del Berhon climb.
