Geraint Thomas' 2020 race plans have begun to take shape, with the 2018 Tour de France champion set to compete in the Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour de Romandie, and Tour de Suisse before leaving for the Tour de France in July.
Team Ineos sent a message Friday confirming most of Thomas' pre-Tour de France plans, but it remains unclear where Thomas will make his 2020 race debut. The team told Cycling News that Thomas could start racing at the Volta ao Algarve in February, but it is not 100% confirmed.
The plan to compete in Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour de Romandie, and Tour de Suisse is roughly in line with Thomas' 2019 race plans.
Thomas has publicly stated that he will not compete in the Giro d'Italia in 2020, and in a personal podcast he stated that he will target the Tour de France this year in order to win a second title.
Thomas, who is currently training in California, will head to the Tour de France in July with Egan Bernal. The Colombian leads Team Ineos one-two in the 2019 race and has already announced that he will be looking to defend his title. Chris Froome's race schedule has yet to be finalized, but the four-time Tour de France winner is also hoping to race, while newcomer Richard Karapas will lead Team Ineos at the Giro d'Italia in May.
Last month, Thomas told The Guardian: "I have my sights set on the Tour. We need to check everything and talk about it, but at the moment we are thinking about the Tour again."
"We have a lot of work to do,"
"We have a lot of work to do.
"If I finish second in the (2019) Tour, I'll be happy and proud, but I was disappointed then," Thomas said. 'From the start, the way the season progressed, the off-season. The build-up wasn't as good as 2018, but I still felt confident."
