Cameron Meyer finally wins the Australian Road Race title.

The fifth and final day of the 2020 Australian Road Championships in Buninyong, Victoria, on Sunday was a great day for Mitchelton Scott. First, Amanda Spratt won the elite women's road race title, followed by Cameron Meyer achieving the same feat in the elite men's race.

This was Spratt's third road race win, but Meyer has been in the hunt for the Australian title for the past 12 years, coming close many times but never reaching the gold medal.

"It's been 12 long years," a tearful but happy Meyer told reporters at the finish line. I fell in love with this competition a long time ago, and I've missed it so many times."

"I'm so happy to have made it to the finish line.

"Someone asked me the other day, 'You've won nine world championships, why do you want this one so badly?'" the 32-year-old said of the Madison, points race, and Team Pursuit world titles he has won on the track over the years. 32 also, twice national time trial champion in 2010 and 2011, national criterium champion in 2013, and won time trial gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"My brother won it (Travis Meyer in 2010) and Luke Durbridge (one of my best buddies) won it (in 2013).

"I can't wait to get back to Australia as soon as summer arrives and the first week of January. I love Australia and I don't know how long this will take to sink in, but I couldn't be happier."

An Olympic medal is one of the few awards Meyer has yet to achieve, and one he hopes to put right this summer in Tokyo.

"Yes, it is. It's a big year, and the Olympics is a big goal.

"We needed key players for today's move. Being outnumbered was our best chance to win, and the players showed that right to the end."

"We were able to get a good start, but we also had a lot of trouble getting the ball out of our hands.

"With Nick [Schulz] on the road, we were in the driving seat. Unlike the last few years, the selection was made late in the race, probably because the weather was milder. And the racers ran together selflessly and with great effort. The goal was to get the jersey back on someone's shoulders, and that was accomplished.

"I've worked with Cam for 12 years, so it's great that his tenacity paid off and it means a lot to bring the jersey back to Europe as a team," White said.
