The 2020 Volta a Catalunya will be the 100th edition of the event with a 21.1 km individual time trial on the second stage in Bañoles, the first medium-distance time trial since 2007 and the first time a time trial of any distance has been held since the prologue in 2010 The stages are as follows. [Details of each stage will be announced on February 6; the 2020 Volta a Catalunya will begin in Calella on March 23 and conclude in Barcelona on March 29.
The 100th edition of the Volta a Catalunya will feature two summit finishes, but for the first time since 2013, the La Molina climb is not on the route. The third stage will finish on the Valtell 2000, which climbs 11.4km at an average of 7.7%. Adam Yates beat Egan Bernal, Dan Martin, Nairo Quintana, and eventual overall winner Miguel Angel Lopez in a five-man sprint at this finish in 2019.
On stage 4, the Volta peloton will tackle the 18.5km, 6.5% average summit finish of Port Aine. Porto Aine was last featured in 2016, when lone rider Thomas de Gendt took the win ahead of Quintana and Richie Porto.
Miguel Angel Lopez won the 2019 Volta a Catalunya ahead of Adam Yates and Egan Bernal. Lopez is set to return to defend his title in 2020, and Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin Phoenix) is also expected to line up for the Tour de Flanders.
Earlier this month, organizers announced the wildcard teams that will join the UCI World Team, with Alpecin Phoenix, Arkea-Samsic, Burgos-BH, Caja Rural, Circus - Wanty Gobert, and Fundacion Euskadi receiving invitations.
