Organizers of the 2020 Herald Sun Tour say that while the current wildfire problems in Australia will not affect the route of the stage race, which will be held in Victoria from February 5-9, the situation is being closely monitored and as the race gets closer The necessary changes will be made as the race draws closer.
In recent weeks, organizers of the now-concluded Australian Road Championships, the upcoming Tour Down Under (January 16-26), and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (January 1-2) have all issued statements to the same effect.
"Herald Sun Tour event organizers are currently monitoring the Victorian bushfire emergency and its potential impact on those attending or participating in the Jayco Herald Sun Tour, February 5-9, 2020.
"The safety of riders, staff, volunteers, officials, and spectators is our top priority. At this time, we have no plans to change or cancel the event. However, there is a possibility that changes may need to be made."
"The event will be held on the same day as the event.
The Australian bushfires continue to burn in most of Victoria and New South Wales, while other states, including South Australia, will host the Women's Tour Down Under from January 16-19 and the Men's Tour Down Under from January 19-26. Both races pass through areas that have been hit by major fires in recent weeks, including Cadley Creek and Woodside in the Adelaide Hills, and the situation continues to be monitored by race organizers and emergency services.
Areas close to the route of the women's Herald Sun Tour (February 5-6) and men's event (February 5-9), which start in Nagambie, 130 km north of Melbourne, are unaffected, but organizers and authorities remain on high alert.
"Event organizers are currently working with emergency service agencies and local government officials to obtain the latest and most accurate information," the Herald Suntour statement continued.
"Any decisions regarding the event will be guided by the advice and information obtained from these agencies, and participants and officials will be provided with updated information as soon as possible."
