Sunweb Development Team rider Ed Maas posted a video of himself walking again with the help of a bionic exoskeleton.
The Dutch rider was seriously injured when he collided with a car entering the course on the Madonna del Ghisallo descent of Il Piccolo Lombardia.
Ten days after the crash, the team announced that 19-year-old Maas was left paralyzed in both legs. Maas also suffered facial and neck fractures at the 126 km mark of the 176 km race.
"Edo has now been diagnosed with a fracture in his back that has led to paralysis with loss of nerve sensation in his legs. At this point, the chances of his leg returning to function are still slim, but the fight and hope prevail."
On Monday, Maas posted a video on Instagram showing him walking a few steps on crutches and wearing a Free Walk exoskeleton from Taiwanese company Free Bionics.
The device, which is worn on the hip and leg, has a travel speed of 2 km/h and a battery life of 2 hours. According to the company's website, this is intended to help people with weakened lower limbs walk independently again.
After the Mars accident, Team Sunweb appealed to the UCI to prioritize the safety of teams and riders in races.
"While we cannot undo this devastating tragedy, we reiterate our request to our governing body (UCI) to prioritize all time and resources to ensure safe racing conditions for teams and riders," the statement said. [This week has been a very difficult week for the Team Sunweb family. We send them all our strength and prayers during this difficult time."
