Geraint Thomas Targets Triathlon and Ironman Competitions in Retirement

Geraint Thomas admitted that when he retires from professional cycling, he plans to take up triathlon and compete in Ironman events.

In 2018, Thomas's interest in the sport came to light when former professional cyclist-turned-triathlete Cameron Waugh revealed that he trains with Thomas and swims and runs in addition to cycling.

The Ironman consists of a 3.86 km swim, a 180.2 km bike ride, and a full 42.2 km marathon run.

In an on-stage interview this month at Nytro, the California triathlon company where Thomas trains with Wurf, the Team Ineos rider confirmed his plan.

"I swam a lot as a kid and did a few triathlons. When I retire from professional cycling, I definitely want to do an Ironman.

"I'll be competing in Wales first. The bike course should be pretty hard, so that might give me an advantage."

Thomas is 33 and will turn 34 in May. Thomas is 33 and will turn 34 in May. When we spoke about changing directions, he suggested that he would continue cycling for "three or four years."

"If I were to stop in three or four years, ...... I'm in my 14th year, so I might end up doing 18 years professionally. I did two years as an amateur before that, and cycling was my life when I was a junior, so that's all I'm going to do and think about for the next 20+ years.

"It would be tough to stop and have nothing, so why not Ironman?

In 2018, Wolff became friends through Team Ineos and revealed that he was training with Thomas. Wolff raced at the World Tour level with Candondale in 2013 and 2014 after competing in rowing at the Olympics and before becoming a triathlete. He is currently coached by Team Ineos head coach Tim Kerrison and is a regular at the team's training camps throughout the year.

In 2018, Thomas blogged about being shocked by the Welshman's triathlon ability at a training camp in Monaco in August, shortly after Thomas won the Tour de France. Kellison added Thomas to the Ironman group chat and asked Wolff to bring his swimming gear to the beach the next morning.

"When I looked back at the edge of the 200 meter stretch of water we use for our open water sessions at Larbot Beach, I couldn't believe how close he was. He can definitely swim!" Wurf writes.

"After the swim, he put on his running shoes with me and we did some speed exercises.

Thomas will compete in the Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour de Romandie, and Tour de Suisse in preparation for his 2020 Tour de France appearance.
