Wild Card Teams Announced for 2020 Giro d'Italia

With no surprises in RCS Sport's Giro d'Italia wildcard selection, race organizers announced that Italian pro teams Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec, Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè, and Vini Zabù-KTM (formerly Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia) to the first Grand Tour in 2020.

As the top two teams in last year's Pro Continental ranking, both Total Direct Energie and Circus Wantigover had priority negotiating rights for two of the wild card slots. With these two teams declining the chance to run in Italy, the RCS was able to invite all teams based in their home country.

Vini Zabou did not receive an invitation last year, but will return to the race. Meanwhile, Androni Giocattoli will compete in the 2020 Giro for the third year in a row and Bardiani for the 11th year in a row.

"We are delighted that the organizers have once again put their faith in our project. We intend to live up to it and honor each stage of the season's number one competition as always."

Among the wild cards for 2019, the Israel Cycling Academy has been promoted to the World Tour and transformed into the Israel Startup Nation, earning automatic qualification in the process. The Nippo Vini Fantini Faizane disbanded at the end of the 2019 season, citing WorldTour reforms and reduced chances of securing an invitation to the Giro.

The 2020 edition will start in Budapest, Hungary and, contrary to the recent trend of short, aggressive mountain stages, will return to a more "traditional" route with a number of long, brutal stages. The final week will feature five stages over 200 km, three of which include climbs over 5,000 meters.

RCS Sport has also announced the invited riders for the three major spring races, Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, and Milan-San Remo. The Alpecin Phoenix team, with Mathieu Van der Pol, qualified for both the Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo, but was not invited to the "two sea races."

Elsewhere, Total Direct Energy was invited to Tirreno and San Remo, while Circus-Wanty Gobert will compete in San Remo and Strade Bianche. Arkea Samsic of France will compete in Tirreno and Strade Bianche.
