Geraint Thomas and Eoghan Bernal to Lead Tour de France

Geraint Thomas and Eoghan Bernal will co-lead Team Ineos in the 2020 Tour de France. Team Ineos boss Dave Brailsford outlined a preliminary race program highlighting the team's Grand Tour leaders in a video posted on the team's social media accounts on Thursday.

"It's something we plan for at this time of year, but in this sport things can always change," Brailsford said. At the moment, we are thinking that Richard [Calapaz] will compete in the Giro and try to retain his title there, while Gelant [Thomas] and Egan [Bernal] will try and focus on the Tour."

Bernal won the 2019 Tour de France and Thomas finished second overall; Thomas, who won the 2018 Tour, has previously expressed his desire to target this race again, preferably the Giro d'Italia, this July.

Thomas' 2020 race plans are beginning to take shape, as he is set to compete in the Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour de Romandie, and Tour de Suisse before the Tour de France in July.

Chris Froome has won the Tour four times in the past (2013, 2015-2017), but did not race last year after a major crash in training at the Criterium du Dauphiné ended his season early. In this crash he fractured his femur, hip, elbow, spine, and sternum.

After a long recovery process, Froome is back in full-time training at a camp in Gran Canaria. He says he wants to be at his best for his fifth Tour de France title.

"And of course, with Chris [Froome] back, he still craves his fifth big win and is working very, very hard to get back to the level he needs to be competitive," Brailsford said.

"That's what we're working on and that's where we are right now. We're in a good position."

Brailsford revealed that time trial world champion Rohan Dennis will compete in the Giro d'Italia with Calapaz, while also focusing on his preparations for the Tokyo Olympics.

"With a rider like Rohan Dennis on the team, he will be competing in this year's Giro, but he also has Olympic goals.

Team Ineos has young talents like Tao Geoghegan Hart, Honatan Narvaez, Pavel Sivakov, and Ivan Sosa, all of whom have the potential to make the Grand Tour roster again this season.

"We also have young riders who are developing, and we will have some of them join the Tour team and some others join the Giro team to gain experience," Brailsford said.

Brailsford said he believes that Grand Tours in general have changed over the years in terms of time trials and the amount of climbing. He also said that he feels that rival teams and GC riders have improved recently and are challenging Team Ineos, and he expects there to be a challenge in the 2020 Grand Tour.

"We can identify areas where we can improve and get better and find the puzzle to win this year," he said. The Tour was very exciting," he said. I think this year's Grand Tour will be a lot of fun and spectacular.

Team Ineos united at a team training camp in Mallorca in December, and Denis and Sivakov will be on the start line at the Santos Tour Down Under in January. Bernal and Karapas will lead Team Ineos' All-Latin America roster at Tour Colombia 2.1 in February.

"I think it's a season full of opportunity and excitement. 'There's a real energy in the group and they really want to do it. They want to race."

"They want to race flashy and spectacular, they want to win, and they want to make courageous choices instead of comfortable choices. Let's try to make great things happen for them (the fans), for us, and for this sport as a whole."
