Lemko Evenpoel has revealed his main goals for the 2020 season.
The 19-year-old will make his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d'Italia and is one of the favorites to win the pink jersey in Budapest. Evenpoel, who attended the Detunink-Quick Step training camp in Spain, told Cycling News that it is possible.
"It's a short 10km and I think it's uphill at the end," Evenpoel said of the Giro's opening time trial. So I'm going to ride as hard as I can, and if that's enough to take the pink jersey, then that's enough to take the pink jersey. But I'm going to do everything I can to go as fast as possible."
It is unusual for someone so early in his career and at such a young age to take part in the sport's toughest endurance race, the three-week Grand Tour. For Evenpoel, it remains to be seen whether he will continue to participate until the final time trial in Milan.
Instead, they will watch Evenpoel's progress throughout the race and go from there.
"Ultimately, we'll see how it goes. I'm hoping it won't be my last Grand Tour," he said. I'll get some experience, get a feel for the Grand Tour, and then see how my body reacts...If after 10 days I feel empty, I'll retire, and if I feel good until the last day, I'll keep going."
Along with the Ardennes Classics, the Giro forms a major part of Evenpoel's first "segment" goal for 2020, as he heads to La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in April to compete in both races for the first time.
"I really like the Ardennes. I like it better than the Ardennes in Flanders, so it's my favorite area in Belgium. It will be a great feeling to start there. I think it will be a nice discovery of the Ardennes."
After a summer break, Evenpoel has his sights set on the Tokyo Olympics and may attempt both road races and time trials.
Both races are for climbers, with the 234-km road race offering 4,865 m of climbing and the 44.2-km time trial course, based at Fuji Speedway, challenging six hills and 846 m of climbing.
"I think so," Evenpoel said of being able to target both races. 'Both the time trial and the road race have a lot of hills and a lot of climbs. They're both really big goals and I'll try to get the most out of both races."
Evenpoel's ultimate goals for 2020 are the World Championships and Il Lombardia, another climber's course in Switzerland, and while it is unheard of for a teenager to spend a season targeting the world's biggest races, after winning the European time trial title in his debut season and a solo win at the Clasica San Sebastián and a silver medal at the World Championships Time Trial, so it's a natural progression.
"I think it's possible to have a better year," he said. I won five races last season, three at a pretty high level and the rest were small races."
"I can have a bigger season if you look at the amount of races I win and the categories. I'm a winner and I always want to be better, so hopefully the next season will be better than last season."
