Despite winning the Tour de France last year at age 22, Egan Bernal said he was not in optimal condition for the race. He is trying to fix this problem this year in order to focus "100%" on winning the yellow jersey.
Bernal rode a solid race in his second Tour and second Grand Tour, becoming the youngest Tour winner in over 100 years.
He was scheduled to lead the Giro d'Italia, but broke his collarbone just before the race. He raced the Tour for 32 days, which is not a lot for an athlete competing in the Tour.
"The biggest change this year is to focus on the Tour," Bernal said in a Team Ineos video looking ahead to the new season.
"Last year I was preparing for the Giro and the Tour, and I think I rode too many miles for the Tour. It may not be the ideal scenario to perform well in the Tour.
Bernal's 2020 race program has not yet been finalized, but he will begin his campaign in his native Colombia in February.
Then he will try to defend his title in Paris-Nice in March. in 2019, Bernal broke his collarbone in training after running the Volta a Catalunya and returned to win the Tour de Suisse ahead of the Tour. the second stage race in March will be held to reduce the kilometer count. He has not yet decided whether he will compete in the Criterium du Dauphiné in Switzerland as a preparation race for the Tour, as he may cut it to reduce the number of kilometers.
At the Tour, Bernal will again share the leadership with 2018 winner and 2019 runner-up Geraint Thomas.
"This year I'm concentrating on the Tour de France. But there's not much time between the Giro and the Tour because of the Olympics this year. The mountains really pack a punch, so I want to come into the Tour fresh," Bernal said.
"It's special to get the number one number and go for GC again. I'm the winner of the last race, I have a lot of respect for this race, and I know the team has a lot of faith in me.
Just one week after the final stage of the Tour de France, Bernal will compete in the Tokyo Olympic road race. Just one week after the final stage of the Tour de France, Bernal will compete in the Tokyo Olympic road race.
"This year's Olympics will be an important race for everyone. I want to do well for Colombia, but my main goal is the Tour de France."
"I don't want to think about two races. The Olympics are a week after the Tour, so if I finish in good condition I can make it to the Olympics. Mentally, I prefer to concentrate on the Tour, aim for the Olympics, and see what happens."
