Geraint Thomas hinted that this year's Tour de France could be his last chance to win the yellow jersey for a second time.
Thomas, a Welshman who won the Tour in 2018 but had to settle for second place behind Team Ineos teammate Egan Bernal last year, was tempted to target the 2020 Giro d'Italia, but he told the Tour "one more time He admitted that he would like to give the Tour "just one more try.
Thomas will turn 34 in May before racing the Tour at the end of June, and he has already said this year that he wants to take up triathlon after retirement.
"The Tour will be a big goal for me again. Of course, the Giro was hard. I would love to return to the Tour eventually, but I wanted to be a big hitter again," Thomas said in a Team Ineos video.
"After all, the Tour is the Tour.
Thomas also has his sights set on this year's Olympics, where he hopes to represent Great Britain in both the individual time trial and the road race in Tokyo, Japan, just seven days after the final stage of the Tour.
"My love of sports in general started when I was a kid watching the Olympics in the front room of my house. Not just cycling, but any sport.
"Between the Tour and the Olympics, it goes by so fast and there is a time difference. Ideally, there would be another week. Perhaps a different program than the Giro would be better suited to the Olympics. But at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the time trial was on Thursday and the Tour finished on Sunday. I think it's a mindset issue.
Thomas explained that he feels much more optimistic about the upcoming season than he did this time last year. Winning the Tour changed his life, and last winter his training became less of a priority, as he struggled to find the form he had earlier in the season.
Despite crashing out of the Tour de Suisse, he finished second in the Tour de France and laid a firmer foundation this winter.
"I definitely feel so much better and different compared to this time last year. I started training earlier and I think I took twice as much time off as I did last year." [I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the race, being part of the mix, and enjoying it. I can't say I enjoyed it last year. It always felt like a big battle to get to a level where I was used to competing
"You just have to go out there and win. That's what drives me. I'll do everything I can to get into the race in the best possible condition. Even if I don't win, or get on the podium, or finish in the top 10, I'll still be successful if I go into the Tour in my best condition.
