Spratt fails to win fourth straight "Women's Tour Down Under" title

Amanda Spratt, seeking her fourth consecutive win in the Santos Women's Tour Down Under, heads into Sunday's final criterium with a seven-second lead over overall leader Ruth Winder (Trek-Segafredo). The Australian said she was disappointed not to win this race again.

"Of course there is always disappointment because you always come here for the overall win. But that's cycling racing, you can't always win.

Mitchelton-Scott has won every event, starting with Katrin Garfoot's win at the inaugural UCI Women's Tour Down Under in 2016. Spratt won the overall title in the next three events (2017-2019) and was poised to win her fourth title on Sunday.

But as the race heads into the final criterium, it is looking more and more likely that Winder and Trek-Segafredo will take the top crown this year.

Spratt took the overall lead in the four-day women's Tour Down Under after her second stage win in Birdwood. She leads the overall standings by four seconds over Winder and five seconds over Leanne Lippert (Sunweb) heading into stage 3, the 109.1 km race from Nehl to Stirling.

Spratt then won the stage 3 uphill sprint and lost the leader's jersey to Winder, the U.S. representative, who won a 10-second time bonus to move into the overall lead.

"It was a tough day. I'm proud of the way the team ran, fighting to defend the Ochre jersey. Of course, I'm really disappointed that I couldn't hold on to the jersey for the team, but I want to give a big round of applause to (Ruth Winder and Trek-Segafredo) for a great win."

The Women's Tour Down Under concludes with stage 4, a 42.5km circuit race in Adelaide. The peloton will ride a 1.7km circuit through the heart of Adelaide, with three intermediate sprints on laps 6, 12, and 18. A total time bonus of 19 seconds will be awarded.

Winder will start the final stage with a 7-second lead over Lippert in second and Spratt in third.

Anything can happen on the final day, but given the number of the world's top sprinters looking for a group sprint in Adelaide, it seems unlikely that Spratt will win his fourth title.
