Paris-Roubaix organizer ASO has announced the six wild cards for the 2020 competition, which will be held on April 12. The biggest news among the wild cards is the invitation of Mathieu Van der Pol's Alpecin Phoenix team.
The Dutch rider, who won the Amstel Gold Race and the Doire de Flenderen last year, will tackle the cobbles of northern France for the first time this spring.
All four French pro teams have earned invitations, and Total Direct Energy, who topped the 2019 Pro Continental standings, has an automatic invitation. They will be joined in the Tour by Alcare Samsic and B&B Hotels Vital Concepts.
Nippo Delko One Provence will also receive an invitation. They were the best-placed French team in Roubaix last year, thanks to Evaldas Šiškevičius' 9th place finish. Circus Wanty Gobert also earned an automatic berth after finishing second in the Pro Continental and was on the list of invited riders.
In addition to the six wild card teams, 19 World Tour teams will participate in the Compiègne. Last year, Philippe Gilbert (now Lotto Soudal) won the Roubaix velodrome ahead of Nils Pollitt.
Paris-Roubaix is the latest race to be confirmed as an addition to van der Pol's 2020 calendar after his team was invited to Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo last week, and the Volta a Catalunya before that.
Van der Poel, a two-time cyclo-cross world champion, will end his cross season on February 2 in Switzerland, where he will try to win his third title.
Later in the year, he has set his sights on a mountain bike cross-country race at the Tokyo Olympics and has indicated his intention to compete in the Vuelta a España if the team receives an invitation.
