Benyat Inchausti held a press conference at Seguros headquarters in Bilbao on Monday to announce the end of his career as a professional cyclist. The Basque rider raced for Team Sky from 2016 to 2018 after completing a five-year stint with Movistar. During his time with Sky, he was plagued by repeated problems with Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis).
The 33-year-old signed with Euskadi Murias last year in hopes of recovering and returning to the World Tour, but said he never returned to his previous level.
"I couldn't get back to the level I was at or wanted to be at. As much as I tried, it was impossible. Now it is time to announce that my career is over here. I am happy and proud of what I have achieved," Inchausti said, according to Biciclismo.
Inchausti's biggest year came in 2013, when he led for a day at the Giro d'Italia, winning a stage and finishing eighth overall, and winning a stage and overall at the Tour of Beijing. He also won a Giro stage in 2015 before signing with Team Sky.
This was his last win, and he lost the 2016 season to a viral infection. He tried to regain his form by dabbling in cyclocross in the off-season, but suffered a third infection. Team Sky was patient, but in 2018 Inchausti only completed one race in Hammer Stavanger and started the other two.
"I've been sick for a long time, recovering and relapsing, but this past year was my last chance. Now I look forward with optimism. My future is open and I face them with the same enthusiasm I had for the bike. I want to achieve new goals and dreams."
