After the first stage of the Vuelta a San Juan was ruined by a pile-up by a spectator, several riders in the breakaway crashed on the second stage when a dog jumped out.
The accident occurred with 148km remaining on the flat stage that started and finished in Pocito, won by Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates). As the breakaway group was 1:14 ahead of the peloton, a black dog jumped out into their path.
Leandro Velardez (Agrupacion Virgen de Fatima-Saddle Drunk), Christopher Jurado (Panama), and Iker Ballarin (Fundacion Orbea) managed to avoid a collision with the dog. Robinson Ruiz (Peru) was not so lucky, hitting a dog and slipping while trying to avoid a collision with Balarin.
Just behind the Peruvians, Berardes' teammate and sprinter leader Daniel Juarez was unable to avoid flying over the handlebars and crashing into the deck. Further back, the rest of the breakaway, including Robin Carpenter (Rally Cycling), was forced to stop.
Meanwhile, a dog, reportedly unhurt, was soon seen running away from the scene of the accident.
All riders returned to the race without problems, but Ruiz dropped back to the main peloton after returning to his bike. Gaviria sprinted from the pack to take his first win of the season ahead of Nicolas Javier Naranjo (Agrupacion Virgen de Fatima-Saddle Drunk) and Marco Benfat (Bardiani-CSF-Faisane).
The Colombian led the race by more stage positions than first stage winner Rudy Barbier (Israel Startup Nation). The Vuelta a San Juan continues on Tuesday with stage 3, a 15.2 km time trial from Ulm to Punta Negra.
