Julian Alaphilippe abandoned the Vuelta a San Juan on Tuesday. He was 30 seconds behind race leader Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates).
Alaphilippe's Detunink-Quick Step team announced on Twitter that he had a stomach complaint. A team spokesman told Cycling News that Alaphilippe developed stomach problems on Monday and is unable to eat as a result.
The third stage of the Vuelta a San Juan, a 15.5-km individual time trial, was won by Alaphilippe, who has had a very successful 2019, including leading the race for 14 days at the Tour de France.
Alaphilippe will resume his season with the Tour Colombia 2.1 in February and will use Paris-Nice as his final tune-up for the spring classics. His main goal is the Ardennes Classics (Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège) before his first Tour de Flanders.
The team announced that Alaphilippe will leave Argentina today and travel to Colombia to join his teammates who are already in pre-race training camps.
