If the Tour Down Under is any indication, Caleb Yuan may be the fastest sprinter in the 2020 World Tour.
Yuan made Tour de France history in 2019 with three stage wins, and unlike previous Grand Tours, he finished the race including a stage win on the Champs-Élysées; after winning the Brussels Classic in early September, he ended the season early;
Yuan's first stage win in the Tour de France came in the Tour de France in 2008, when he took the stage win in the Tour de France.
Ewan's move to Lotto-Soudal was fruitful, with 10 wins last year, including five Grand Tour stages, and a tremendous turn of speed in the Tour Down Under, with an upset victory at Stirling and a showdown with Sam Bennett (Beulah Hansgrohe) at Murray Bridge Showed.
"I wasn't really sure how well I was doing after not racing for so long, and I wanted to make the season easier than usual by making the Tour Down Under my first race of the season," Ewan told Cycling News.
"It's great to start winning straight away."
In the Tour Down Under, Lotto Soudal faced a strong train of Deceuninck-Quick Step with Bennett and Cofidis with Elia Viviani; of the four sprint stages, Ewan won two, Bennett and NTT's Giacomo Nizzolo won the others. Despite his impressive winning percentage, Ewan admitted that he made a mistake on stage 5 that cost him a possible victory.
"It's hard to do every sprint perfectly because the sprints are chaotic and complicated. We will make mistakes, like in stage 5 when I left Roger's steering and he led the sprint.
"But I feel that everything is going well and I won two sprints. I am happy with my sprints and my riding."
Euan will compete in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, followed by the UAE Tour and Paris-Nice before heading to his first major goal, Milan-San Remo.
"I always go into the season with certain goals. I think it will be the same as last year, but as a sprinter you always want to overachieve," Ewan said. I'm going to try to do better than I did last year, which means I'm going to try to win more races and try to win the Tour de France again."
Three stage wins in the Tour de France will be hard to match, but Ewan says he is on the upswing.
"I'm only 25 and I just finished my first Grand Tour last year. I think it has helped me to improve again and I expect to be even stronger."
"I've been working hard and I'm looking forward to the next stage.
