According to Bicycling.nl (opens in new tab), Jumbo-Visma is considering adding a women's team to its lineup.
Jumbo-Visma manager Richard Plagge told the magazine that the company is investigating the idea.
"Next season, Boels-Dolmans, one of the biggest women's teams, will lose both main sponsors. Maybe the team will disappear, maybe it will reopen. Either way, I have the impression that we have room to build our own women's team from the ground up," Plug said.
Boels Dolmans is the top-ranked team in the 2019 UCI World Ranking and the UCI Women's World Tour and has been for the past five seasons, with Anna van der Breggen, Amy Peters, and Christine Majerus leading the scoring.
The team avoided a new WorldTeam roster after two co-title sponsors announced they would end their contracts with the team in September. Coach Danny Stam stated that he was confident he could find a replacement at the same level and that he hoped the team would remain independent and not become part of the men's team.
Plug, who has added an under-23 development program and community outreach at the Jumbo Visma Academy, recognizes that more needs to be done to develop girls and women in cycling.
"At the Academy, we often talk about making boys' dreams come true. But we are equally committed to girls' dreams. At its heart, we want to share our love and passion for cycling with more people in the Netherlands. We can do that through our academy, but in the long run we can also do it through our own women's team."
If Jumbo Visma adds a women's team, it would be the ninth WorldTour organization to have both a men's and women's top team: Astana, CCC, Groupama-FDJ, Lot Soudal, Mitchelton Scott, Movistar, Sunweb and Trek Segafredo all have women's teams.
