Boels-Dolmans manager Danny Stam set an April deadline for finding a new funder after Boels Rentals and Dolmans announced that their sponsorship of the team would end this year.
Stamm told Cycling News that he is in negotiations with potential sponsors and confirmed that he has not had any discussions with Jumbo Visma, the men's World Tour team, about a women's team planned for 2021.
"We are currently working hard to realize our future and are in negotiations with several potential sponsors," Stamm told Cycling News. [If we don't have something definite by the end of April, we think it will be too late to maintain a good level [of team]. But I don't think we need to wait that long."
Asked if he would be willing to restructure the team into a smaller program if a new sponsor could not be found, Stamm said, "I'm still confident, but if there is no replacement (because it won't work on a smaller scale) we will close."
Boels Dolmans has been the most successful women's team in recent years; since 2015 they have been the number one women's team in the world, winning the elite women's road race world championship four years in a row: Lizzie Deignan (2015), Amalie Dideriksen (2016 ), Chantal Black (2017), and Anna van der Breggen (2018).
Despite such success, the team announced that co-title sponsors Boels Rental and Dolmans would not renew their contract beyond 2020. The announcement was made at the 2019 UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire, where the corporate owners thanked the team for its growth and achievements in women's cycling over the past five years.
There are currently eight WorldTour teams with both men's and women's outfits, but Stam told Cycling News that he wants the team to be independent of the men's WorldTour team.
Boels Dolmans failed to secure new top-level World Team status this year because it could not offer a four-year sponsor guarantee. However, Stamm is confident that the team will find a new sponsor and will continue to build the program.
"We still feel the same way," Stam told "Cycling News" about not wanting to partner with the men's team. 'Of course, it would be nice to have a relay with the men's team, but we prefer to remain independent and focus only on the women's team, giving them full priority so they can focus on their sport.'
However, according to Bicycling.nl, men's World Tour team Jumbo Visma is considering adding a women's program to its lineup next year. Team manager Richard Plagge told the magazine that the idea is being considered and that opportunities could open up depending on the outcome of Boels Dolmans' search for sponsors.
Plugge noted that if Boels Dolmans is unable to replace its sponsor, it may be forced to release top riders such as former world champion van der Breggen and Blake. Plug believes that Jumbo Visma has the resources to build its own program.
Stamm told Cycling News that he has not been in contact with the Jumbo Visma organization about a possible merger or acquisition of Boels Dolmans, but is interested in hearing their ideas.
"We are open to listening, but for now we have our own interests," Stamm said.
Asked if he was concerned about losing top riders to the possibility of a new Jumbo Visma women's team, Stamm replied, "In this world, riders always come and go, even if they have a long-term future."
