Annemiek van Fruten Attends Mitchelton Scott Men's Team Training Camp - Video

Annemieke van Fruten participated in the Mitchelton Scott Men's Winter Training Camp for the second year in a row, riding 200 km on 10 consecutive training days in January.

The new road world champion is preparing for a three-pronged attack on the Classics, the Olympics, and the 2020 World Championships.

The Mitchelton-Scott team is documenting van Grooten's training and racing in a new video series called "Annemieke van Grooten - What It Takes."

The first episode, "One of the boys," provides a behind-the-scenes look at her motivation, struggles, and the impact of her presence at the Mitchelton Scott men's team training camp.

"What am I doing here?" I'm sure I think, but it makes me stronger and I know it's what drives me," Van Vleuten said of training camp.

The Mitchelton Scott men's team has been participating in this early season training camp since 2018. This camp consists of 10 days of riding approximately 200 km each day. It is designed to simulate the routine of a stage race, with different roads, transfers, and hotels each day.

According to Mitchelton-Scott, the goal of the camp is to "empty the tank" by loading up but not increasing intensity. Van Vleuten attended this camp last year at the urging of sport director Jean Bates. At that camp she climbed 1,800 km and 30,000 meters.

Van Vleuten won the elite women's road race in the 2019 season with victories in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Giro Rosa, and a successful 105 km solo attack at the World Championships in Yorkshire.

The kilometers she rode in training camp contributed to her training mileage in the early part of the 2020 season, more than any other elite male athlete except Egan Bernal (Team Ineos). These stats were calculated from the Velofacts list of Strava training uploads that began in January.

Future episodes of the video series will further explore van Breuten's world - what level she pushes herself to in training, fueling, and preparation, and what controls and drives the mind of one of the world's best female riders
