Daniel Martinez (EF Pro Cycling) defeated 2019 Tour de France winner Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) and Arkea Samsic's Nairo Quintana on Thursday on the 41.4km course in Pesca to win the Colombian national championships in time trial victory. Repeats.
The 23-year-old clocked 48:02, 28 seconds faster than Quintana and 32 seconds faster than Bernal. This victory over quality competition bodes well for Martinez as he heads into the 2020 season with his sights set on the Tour de France.
Martinez missed the Grand Boucle last year after breaking his wrist and thumb in a training crash in June; he won the individual time trial at the Pan American Games in August and finished in the top 10 in the stage 10 time trial at the Vuelta a EspaƱa He finished 41st overall.
Bernal also tied the Colombian time trial record for 2019, finishing third behind Martinez and Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez.
"I think we should be happy with this result," Bernal said in a statement posted on the Team Ineos website. "It's my first race of the season and I think I did very well in the time trial. I should be happy because my first big goal is the Tour de France. I won't be able to give 100% in Japan, but it was a good test for the next race."
Brandon Rivera, Team Ineos' neo-pro, was fourth, 1:51 behind Martinez, and Esteban Chavez (Mitchelton Scott) was fifth, 1:57 behind. Lopez, who finished third last year, did not participate.
The Colombian National Championships will be held on Sunday with a 217-km road race in Tunja, which will also feature the opening time trial of the Tour Colombia 2.1 stage race from February 11-16.
