Dylan Groenewegen (open in new tab) once again showed his superior power and speed on stage 3 of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana (open in new tab) to take his second stage win of the competition.
The Dutch rider was forced to recover from a late stage crash and gear trouble, but once again beat Fabio Jacobsen (Dečuninck-Quickstep), with Matej Mohoric (Bahrain McLaren) in third place.
Groenewegen, who had already won the opening stage to Vila Real, consolidated his lead in the points chase with his second win. With two stages to go, he leads Jacobsen 50 points to 40.
"The team did a great job. The team did a great job. Thanks to good communication and the team's quick reaction after the fall, I was able to get back in front of the peloton right away," he said after the win.
After the crash, Groenewegen and his Jumbo-Visma (open in new tab) teammates were forced to chase back to the main group. The slowdown of the main bunch helped them, but the Dutch team had to take their sprinter to the front of the peloton before a technical section that included several tight turns. As the sprint unfolded, the other teams tried to take the lead, but a disjointed and confusing final stretch ensued until the pure power of Grunwegen prevented Jacobsen from finishing.
"He brought me into the ideal position for the sprint. I was able to sprint at the perfect time. Because of the crash I had problems with gear shifting and couldn't sprint in the biggest gear. I am very thankful to my team. Without them we wouldn't have won here."
Groenewegen is now looking forward to his third sprint victory and his final sprint opportunity at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana.
"I'm feeling good, I've had a good winter. I'm looking forward to the last day. So far, I'm scoring 100 percent. Winning two sprints gives me a lot of confidence."
The race continues on Saturday with an important mountain stage to Altea. CyclingNews will be covering the stage live.
