Gibbons Wins South African Road Race Title with Victory for NTT Team

NTT Pro Cycling's Ryan Gibbons won the South African Road Race Championships at the Swadini Forever Resort in Mpumalanga province on Sunday, making it a great weekend for the WorldTour team.

Gibbons won the title in a sprint win over defending champion Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) and Jayde Julius (Protouch). Also in the women's race, CCC-Liv's Ashley Moolman Passio successfully defended her title with a win over Juanita Venter and Joanna Van de Winkel.

The 25-year-old Gibbons, who finished second in last year's men's road race behind Impey, who won his ninth national time trial title this year, was eliminated in the top two positions heading into 2020, and the NTT rider will be in all remaining road races this season The South African champion jersey will now be worn with pride.

"More than anything I'm really relieved," Gibbons said in a video posted on Twitter after his victory. The last two years have been troubling for me, so my first goal was to have a smooth run, and to win is really great for me and for the team." [There were only two guys on the Continental team, Marc [Pritzen] and Stefan [de Bodd], and they sacrificed themselves for me.

For the South African team formerly known as Dimension Data, the two-day race was a huge success. The team has Japanese parent company NTT as its main sponsor this year, and it was announced at the beginning of the year that former rider and former Saxo Bank team manager Bjarne Riis would be the team's new coach and co-owner.

On Saturday, Australian Ben O'Connor took a stage win at Mont Bouquet in Etoile de Besseges, and sprinter Max Warscheid won the bunch sprint finish of stage 3 of the Tour de Langkawi in Kuala Lumpur on the same day

On Sunday, the Tour de Langkawi was held in Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to Gibbons' national title on Sunday and Giacomo Nizzolo's stage win at last month's Tour Down Under, NTT has already won four races just a month and a half into the season, significantly breaking its disappointing win total of just seven during the 2019 season.
