Commercial pressure forcing Vaughters to increase roster for Tour de France

Several teams could support multiple leaders in the 2020 Tour de France, with Jumbo Visma having already announced a roster that includes Primoz Roglic, Tom Dumoulin, and Steven Kruijswijk, and Team Ineos could lineup defending champion Eoghan Bernal, 2018 winner Geraint Thomas, and four-time consecutive champion Chris Froome.

EF Pro Cycling general manager Jonathan Vaughters told Tour Colombia 2.1 on Tuesday that having multiple leaders in the Tour is more of a response to the commercial pressure teams receive from sponsors than a trend told Cyclingnews.

"I think it depends a lot on what you've done recruit-wise and the circumstances going into the race," Vaughters said.

"I don't think having multiple leaders is necessarily a trend, but it's certainly something that more and more teams are putting more emphasis on the Tour, and I think that's a good thing.

"So in previous years [with Team Ineos], Geraint Thomas might have run the Giro and only Bernal would have competed in the Tour. Or conversely, with Jumbo Visma, Dumoulin might have run the Giro.

"I think the commercial pressure, the emphasis on the Tour de France, and the fact that sponsors want to see you perform in the Tour de France, I think teams are building up their roster for the Tour, He said.

Team Ineos went into the 2019 Tour with Bernal and then-defending champion Thomas while Froome was out injured. Bernal earned the first Tour victory ever by a Colombian and the team's seventh Tour victory in eight years.

As Movistar has proven, going into the Tour with multiple leaders can be tricky, but Vaughters said it can be a plus.

"With one leader, you can better support one rider. You can protect one rider from crashing; with three, you're scattered and you have less horsepower to support each rider, so it's harder to stay at the top."

"But at the same point, if one of them crashes, there are still two of them. So as a strategy, there are advantages and disadvantages on both sides."

Vaughters also said that things could change dramatically in the months leading up to the Tour.

"As for Jumbo-Visma, I think it is realistic. In Ineos, I think by the time the Tour de France comes around, Bernal will be established as the absolute leader. He said.

Regarding his team's Tour de France roster, Vaughters told Cycling News.

"It's true, but I'm not going to announce it right away," he said. Things change a lot."

"Things change a lot. Internally, we've told people that we have 11 or 12 riders who are looking to go to the Tour, but we're not going to make an outward announcement for a while."

"We don't want riders fighting each other for a spot in the Tour, so it's not about making them compete, it's about making our process a little more secretive."
