Moschetti diagnosed with additional injuries after hip surgery

The Trek-Segafredo team announced that Matteo Moschetti has undergone successful surgery for a hip fracture and that a new injury has been found.

The 23-year-old Moschetti crashed at high speed in the third stage of the Etoile de Besseges after two wins in the Challenge Mallorca.

He suffered a dislocated femur and a fractured labrum (acetabulum), which he dealt with in surgery in Bergamo on Tuesday.

"The accident was a terrible blow and there is no denying it, but I am relieved now that the surgery was successful and I have been cleared to begin rehabilitation," Moschetti said in a team press release.

Moschetti's neo-pro season with Trek-Segafredo last year was marred by a crash at the Giro d'Italia, despite two expected top-five finishes in the sprint stages.

"After an unlucky 2019, I wanted to put that behind me. It was a remarkable start to the season. But now all I can do is look forward, be optimistic, and run aggressively," Moschetti said.

Trek Segafredo's head physician, Dr. Gaetano Daniele, met this Wednesday with Moschetti's surgeon, Dr. Mario Arduini, orthopedic coordinator of the pelvic trauma department at Humanitas Gavazzeni Hospital in Bergamo, to confirm that there were no complications. confirmed that there were none.

In addition to the hip fracture, Moschetti also sustained a non-displaced fracture of the left scapula (scapula), a rib fracture, and a chipped vertebra.

According to the team, Moschetti will begin physical therapy next week and will ride a stationary bike, gradually increasing his time on the bike over the next five to six weeks.

"In a complex case like Matteo's, the time needed for full recovery is very subjective and related to many variables and cannot be accurately determined at this early stage. At the most, Mateo should be able to resume training in mid or late May," Dr. Daniele said.
