According to estimates calculated by Het Laatste Nieuws (opens in new tab), women's cyclocross world champion Ceylin Carmen del Alvarado earned more prize money this season than any of the elite men, including world champion Mathieu van der Pol.
The Dutchwoman finished the season with 126,180 euros in prize money, but her start money and wages were far less than her male counterparts. She was not surprised by the total prize money she earned from her 15 wins and 7 podium finishes.
"Well, that's a nice sum. I myself had no idea," said Alvarado.
"This is of course the first year that I have won so many awards. For me, the prize money is more than my salary or starting salary. In terms of total earnings, I'm not as good as the boys, but it's great to go home with this much money."
This season's rival Annemarie Werst is third on the money list behind Elie Iserbyt with €97,280.
With 10 wins and 13 podium finishes in 31 races, Yzerbito took home €108,380, more than €30,380 more than Belgian champion Laurens Sułek and World Cup winner Toon Artz. Men's World Champion Mathieu van der Pol was left in fifth place with 24 wins and one podium finish for a total of €66,000 in prize money.
The UCI, Superprestige, and DVV Trofee series increased the prize money for women for the 2019-2020 season, bringing equal prize money for the top finishers. The top four finishers in each World Cup series will receive equal prize money, while the top eight finishers in Superprestige and the top 15 finishers in DVV Trofee will receive equal prize money. However, the total prize money for each series is higher for the men than for the women.
