Geraint Thomas and Rohan Dennis lead Team Ineos in the Algarve Volta

Geraint Thomas will make his 2020 debut at the Volta Ao Algarve as part of the powerful Team Ineos, which includes two-time winner Michal Kwiatkowski and time trial world champion Rohan Dennis.

Thomas won the overall in the Volta ao Algarve in 2015 and 2016, and in 2018, when he won the Tour de France, he finished second overall behind teammate Kwiatkowski.

The Welshman skipped this race last year, preferring to start the season with Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, but returned to Portugal at the start of the season, again as co-team leader with Egan Bernal Tour de France.

"I want to focus on the five days of racing," Thomas said through Team Ineos.

"There are a lot of guys on the team like Rohan, Dylan, and Kwiat who have already done more than one week of racing. I'm going to give them a hand and they should still be up there, but I'm not going to go for the win."

"Last year, coming back from winning the Tour, was quite different in my career. Usually I start the season pretty strong. This year it wasn't as intense as usual and it's a little bit different than these days when you're focused on the Tour all year long. I haven't reached my race weight yet, but the power numbers are encouraging. I'm still much lighter than I was this time last year, and my numbers are better."

After riding the Tour Down Under last month, Denis will make his first appearance of the season on the European road in Portugal, where he will shine in the 20km time trial in Lagoa on the final day of racing.

Luke Rowe and Dylan van Baarle, the team's Cobbled Classics mainstays, will also be in the Algarve after starting their campaign in Australia in January.

Sprinter Ben Swift and newcomer Cameron Waugh complete the Ineos lineup.

Wolff has been a triathlete for the past few seasons after leaving Cannondale in 2014, but in 2020 he will combine his career as a triathlete with that of Team Ineos. His first appearance with the team was at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race earlier this month.

The Volta Ao Algarve will start on Wednesday with a flat stage from Portimão to Lagos. The race will feature summit finishes in Alto da Foia on stage 2 and Marjan on stage 4, and will conclude with a time trial in Lagoa.

2019 winner Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) will not compete this week, but will be joined by Remco Evenpole (Detunink-Quickstep), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana), Vincenzo Nibali (Trek-Segafredo), Dan Martin (Israel Startup Nation), and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Phoenix), the field at Volta Ao Algarve is thick.
