Team Sunweb's Martijn Tassfeldt was forced to sit out just a day and a half into the season after suffering a concussion and a broken shoulder in a crash on stage 2 of the Tour de la Provence last week.
The 26-year-old Dutch rider was forced to abandon his first race of the season on the road between Aubagne and La Ciotat.
Subsequent X-rays revealed that Tasveld had a broken shoulder and a concussion.
"I'm really disappointed to have fallen like that after just getting back on the course and having a great offseason," Tasveld said in a Sunweb press release.
"Hopefully, my recovery will be quick and smooth and I'll be back in action soon, but until then, I'm going to focus on getting enough rest and taking it easy."
Last season, Tasfeld crashed on the opening stage of Paris-Nice and broke his jaw. He is unlikely to be away from the race again this time, but Sunweb team doctor Kamiel Aldershov says there is no rush to return.
When recovering from shoulder and collarbone injuries, professional riders often run on home trainers without using their arms, but because of the concussion, Aldershoff warned that Tasveld will need plenty of rest before riding again.
"The fracture appears to be in a good position at the moment, and we will continue to monitor the situation over the next few weeks to make sure things don't change," Aldershoff said. However, the concussion will require Martin to rest completely for the foreseeable future. His return to rollers and racing will be evaluated in due course."
