Specialized has introduced a new series of Recon shoes. The redesigned Recon moves from a laced design to a more balanced trail shoe with either straps or fixed dials.
The California cycling brand markets the new Recon series as a more comfortable off-road shoe for walking when you need to get off and go. If you want a true all-around off-road shoe, the Recon is designed especially for you.
A key feature of the new series is the uniquely named "SlipNot" rubber compound molded into a fairly aggressive sole pattern. This should help stabilize the rider and prevent slipping when getting off the bike or walking on steep trail sections.
Specialized will sell three versions of the new Recon, but it is not just a matter of weight or coloring that distinguishes the three derivatives. Each uses a different fastening system.
The Recon 1 is the most affordable of Specialized's new series at 90 pounds, but weighs the least at 331 grams. The Recon is secured with three Velcro straps, is only available in black, and comes in sizes 36-49.
In the middle, the Recon 2, the two Velcro straps are eliminated in favor of a dual cable fastening system controlled by a single Boa dial. This Recon is available in black and red, weighs 357 grams, and costs 158 pounds.
The only variant available in half sizes, Specialized clearly expects the Recon 2 to be a volume seller, with full sizes ranging from 36-49 and half sizes from 38-47.
Leading the new range is Specialized's Recon 3, priced at £210, with the addition of a second fastening Boa and featuring a carbon fiber sole for optimal power transmission. This is the stiffest of the new Recon shoes and will be available in the 36-49 size range.
