The Caja Rural Seguros RGA announced that it has been notified by the UCI that it will not be banned from competition despite two recent doping incidents.
Under UCI rules, the Spanish professional team team was at risk of a 15-45 day ban due to two incidents involving former team riders Domingos Gonçalves (Portugal) and Jaime Rosson (Spain) that occurred within a 12-month period.
Both riders were sanctioned for UCI Biological Passport fraud, but in Gonçalves' case it was from 2016 when he was racing in the Caja Rural Seguros RGA. Gonçalves has been competing since 2016, when he was a member of the Caja Rural Seguros RGA. The team terminated Gonçalves' contract before the 2020 season.
For Rosson, this covers early 2017 through 2018, when he was with the team, at which point he moved to the Movistar World Tour. The Spanish World Tour team terminated Rosson's contract in February 2019 after his four-year ban was finalized.
The Caja Rural team said Thursday that after submitting their claim to the UCI, the cycling governing body chose not to ban the entire team from the race. They also called the UCI's decision "logical and coherent."
In the same press release, the Caja Rural Seguros RGA emphasized its commitment to zero tolerance regarding doping.
"Furthermore, the team reiterates its zero-tolerance policy on doping and its compliance with all existing rules and regulations," the statement said.
"We will work closely with the relevant regulatory bodies to obtain a clean sport."
." This decision reinforces our longstanding commitment to develop our youth academies and to help young athletes develop personally and professionally."
