Former pro cyclist Zico Weitens, who took up boxing after retiring last season, reacted less diplomatically to Gianni Moscon's angry throwing of a bike at one of Weitens' Belgian compatriots last weekend at the Kuhne Brussel Kuhne.
"Hi @GianniMoscon if you ever throw a bike again to a friend.... I'll pin you to the frame and I'll do it in 6 seconds! Best regards," Waiteens posted on Twitter Sunday evening.
The 28-year-old raced professionally for eight seasons with TopSport Fondren-Barroise, Giant Alpecin, Team Sunweb, Verandas Willems-Claran, and Cofidis before taking up boxing.
Moscon (Team Ineos) was involved in a crash with about 70 km to go in the Coulee Brussel-Coone and fell into a ditch along with many others. To vent his frustration, he picked up his bike and threw it at Jens Debusschere (former Belgian road champion) of B&B Hotels - Vital Concepts. The episode was caught on video, and minutes later the UCI committee disqualified Moscon.
After the race, Debusschere, who was standing next to the team bus and had scratches and cuts on his hands and wrists, told Cycling News that he did not crash but fell into a gutter and was crawling up when the accident occurred. 'The bike flew into my head, even though it wasn't mine,' he said. 'I had to put my hands up to protect myself so it wouldn't hit me in the face. The bike hit me with the chain wheel. I could have hit him at that moment. I was full of adrenaline, but I realized it was best to get back on the bike."
Gabriel Rasch, lead director of Team Ineos' Cune Brussels Cune, told Cycling News and Cycling Podcast that he and the officials had footage of the incident. After reviewing it, he said he agreed with their decision to disqualify Moscon. Rasch said, "This should not have happened."
This is not the first time Moscon has shown unappreciated behavior by his colleagues. He was banned for punching Elie Jezbert at the 2018 Tour de France, and in 2017 he launched a racist tirade against Kevin Reza at the Tour de Romandie. He was also accused of intentionally crashing Reza's teammate Sebastian Reichenbach and breaking his hip and elbow at the 2017 Tre Valli Varesine, but was later cleared for lack of evidence.
After the incident with Reza, Team Ineos suspended Moscon for six weeks and sent him to diversity training. After his punch at the Tour, he was suspended for five weeks by the UCI. Team Ineos has not commented on whether Moscon will be sanctioned within the team for this disqualification.
Meanwhile, DeBusschere told Cycling News that Moscon's combative attitude has won him few friends in the peloton. "It's a series of incidents and it's always the same guy," Debusschere said. "But I really don't care that he was sanctioned. It's not just this case, there are so many others. If you ask people in the peloton about their relationship with him, 90 percent of them will have a negative reaction."
