Jumbo Visma announced that it will miss the Strade Bianche on March 7 and the GP Larchiano (Industria & Artigianato) on March 8 due to the risk posed by the coronavirus outbreak in Italy.
The team confirmed that its decision was based on medical advice and the recommendation of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as for sporting and practical reasons.
"We are aware that teams going to Italy will probably not be able to race in other countries. We must focus on salvaging the majority of the season, not just some races," said a joint statement from the cycling teams, including Team Jumbo-Visma.
Mauro Veni, race director for Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, and Milan-San Remo, had initially said the races would go ahead as planned. But on Wednesday, he said the races could be canceled or moved to June or September if the Italian government approves new, stricter measures to control the spread of the coronavirus throughout Italy.
Jumbo Visma also noted that the same decision would likely apply to other Italian races held in March, such as Tirreno and San Remo.
The team is awaiting a message from the Italian government and is in close contact with the UCI. They will make a decision shortly.
Jumbo Visma said that the medical advice and guidelines of the relevant authorities will be taken into account before a decision is made regarding participation.
"Together with the team's management, I am always thinking and acting on the health and working conditions of the players and staff," said Richard Plug, the team's general director.
"This includes, for example, preventing quarantine abroad. We have to take a broader view and be responsible for the health of our riders, staff, and fans."
