Coronavirus: More Teams Pull Out of Italian Races as Strade Bianche Cancelled

Following the cancellation of the Strade Bianche race, several other teams have also announced that next week's Tirreno-Adriatico and Milano-Sanremo trips to Italy will be canceled.

Organizers of Sunday's GP Industria & Artigianato in Tuscany also announced that the race has been canceled due to an Italian government decree.

More than 3,000 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed, with 107 deaths and 295 people receiving intensive care in hospitals. More than 80% of cases are in northern Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia Romagna, but the health services and local authorities are under great pressure as isolated cases are being discovered every minute throughout Italy, with nearly 50 cases in Tuscany.

RCS Sport has not yet canceled Tirreno-Adriatico and Milano-Sanremo, but due to difficulties in respecting government decrees it is unlikely that the races will take place. This weekend's soccer matches will be held with no public access to the stadiums, and organizers of the Ski World Cup finals in Cortina hope to keep the event alive. However, the nature of road racing makes it very difficult to limit contact between athletes, the public, and race staff.

Some teams did not wait for RCS Sport to cancel the entire Italian program, and the women's team also chose to miss the Trofeo Alfredo Binda on Sunday, March 22. The women's team also chose to miss the Trofeo Alfredo Binda on Sunday, March 22.

Groupama-FDJ, UAE Team Emirates, Team Inose, Astana, Mitchelton Scott, and EF Pro Cycling have already pulled out of Tirreno-Adriatico and part of Milan-San Remo Groupama-FDJ and UAE Team ...Emirates has cited a lack of riders and staff as the reason for the isolation of part of its team to the UAE.

UAE Team Emirates, Team Ineos, Astana, the CCC team, and Mitchelton Scott will miss Paris-Nice. Race organizer ASO has expanded the team size to eight riders to accommodate those unable to compete due to problems in Italy, while also replacing them with other teams.

Jumbo Visma had announced that he would not compete in Strade Bianche even before RCS Sport made its decision. Now the Dutch team has announced that he will miss Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo, citing medical advice from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and after consultation with the athletes and staff. The team will compete in Paris-Nice, which starts Sunday in Paris, and the entry list includes Primoz Roglic and George Bennett.

Team Sunweb has reduced the Italian program for both the men's and women's teams.

"The team made this decision given the exceptional circumstances surrounding COVID-19," Team Sunweb said in a statement.

"We recognize our responsibility to the region in which we travel and the immense pressure that the Italian authorities are currently under in a rapidly developing and incredibly difficult situation. We have a duty of care to our riders, our staff, and the communities in which we compete. This situation goes beyond cycling, and with this decision, as a team, we hope to minimize the impact that potential illnesses could have on these communities.

Minutes after RCS Sport cancelled Strade Bianche, the AG2R La Mondiale team announced that it would miss Tirreno-Adriatico and Milano-Sanremo. Team leader Romain Bardet was scheduled to compete in Tirreno-Adriatico, but will compete in Paris-Nice as a member of AG2R La Mondiale.

"As team manager, I cannot risk the health and integrity of my staff at a time when the Italian's health is very precarious and many legitimate questions are being raised within the team," said team manager Vincent Lavenu.

"When it comes to public health, the interests of sport should never overshadow prudence and wisdom. We are very sorry to the organizers of such a legendary race and have informed them of our decision this morning."

In contrast, the Israeli Startup Nation team said it is prepared to compete in Tirreno-Adriatico and Paris-Nice if the races are held.

"We have come to the conclusion that our team is fully motivated to continue racing as long as we can guarantee that the race can be held safely, following all advice and approvals of the local health authorities, the UCI, and the organizers," team manager Kjell Carlström in a Facebook post.

"Team ISN has given its personal opinion on this matter to all team members. The team informed the riders and staff that their participation in the race is voluntary and up to them."

"If anyone on the team has any reservations about going to a certain race, they can tell us and we will fully respect their decision.
