Cycling Sports Promotions, organizer of the Women's World Tour Trofeo Alfredo Binda-Comune di Cittiglio and Mini Trofeo A. Binda junior races, announced Thursday that the one-day race will be postponed until June 2.
The race was originally scheduled to take place on March 22, but a coronavirus outbreak in Lombardy and elsewhere in Italy forced organizers to act quickly and postpone the race to a later date.
Organizers sent a request to the Italian federation on Wednesday to change the schedule, which was approved; they are awaiting approval of the new schedule from the UCI.
A decree issued by the Italian government Wednesday night banned all sporting events that cannot be held privately as part of an effort to broadly protect public health.
"Pursuant to a decree issued by the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, Cycling Sports Promotions has announced that the 22nd Trofeo Alfredo Binda - Comune di Cittiglio Gran Premio Almar, part of the UCI Women's World Tour calendar, and 8th Trofeo da Moreno - Mini Trofeo A. Binda Nations Cup Trials for junior women have been postponed to June 2," a press statement read.
The Trofeo Alfredo Binda is held in Cittiglio, 70 km northwest of Milan, and traditionally takes place the day after Milan-San Remo.
A representative of Cycling Sports Promotion told Cycling News last week that all sporting events in the Cittiglio area have been suspended until March 1, before determining whether the women's one-day race is safe to hold or whether it needs to be postponed, They are awaiting more information from local public health officials.
The women's event has a long history and will be celebrating its 43rd edition, making it one of the oldest women's events in Italy aside from the Giro d'Italia International Feminile.
The women's field race is a 131.3 km hilly one-day race, finishing with a 17.8 km lap around the finishing town of Cittiglio. Each lap includes a climb through Orino, but the wide open road to the finish often leads to a group sprint, which last year was won by Marianne Vos.
Mario Minervino, president of Cycling Sports Promotion, is optimistic, saying that the new date, June 2, Italy's National and Republic Day, is a fitting date to host one of the country's longest-running women's races.
"These two races celebrating Italian Republic Day will be even more special as they will follow an already established program.
"They will start in Cocchio Trevisago and finish in Cittiglio. Yesterday evening I sent a request to the Cycling Federation and today I received the authorization. Now we are waiting for the authorization from the International Cycling Union."
Public health and safety are the primary concerns, but so far the Women's World Tour has faced cancellations or postponements of the Strade Bianche, Tour of Chongming Island, and Trofeo Alfredo Vinda due to the risks associated with the spread of the coronavirus.
In addition to this, the Emakmen Vila, Tour of California, and Prudential Ride London Classic have already disappeared from the 2020 calendar for other reasons.
