Spanish cycling will discover Tuesday the exact consequences of a new national decree forcing all sporting events to be held behind closed doors to combat the Covid-19 coronavirus.
The decree will be officially announced Tuesday afternoon and will be in effect for at least the next couple of weeks. It will apply across the board to both professional and amateur events.
Reaction to information about the decree and its scope is still mixed. In soccer, Liga Española has already announced that the next two rounds will be played behind closed doors, but the full extent of the decree has not yet been revealed, and it is not at all clear how it will affect sports that are held outside gated arenas, such as cycling. [Jose Luis Lopez Cerón, president of the Spanish Cycling Federation, told Cycling News that.
"We need to know how it will affect not only cycling, but all the other sports that are not usually held in stadiums, and we are currently looking into that."
"With the cancellation of several events in Italy, including Milan-San Remo, Tirreno-Adriatico, and Strade Bianche, the next World Tour race will be the Volta a Catalunya, scheduled to start on March 22.
In the UAE, where the virus first affected cycling, UAE Team Emirates and Gazprom Rusvelo remain quarantined.
As of midday Tuesday, 1,506 coronavirus cases had been confirmed in Spain, with 35 deaths.
