Organizers of the 2020 Colorado Classic announced Monday the host cities for this year's race, which will be held August 27-30. The four-day women's race will be held in Snowmass Village, Avon, Boulder, and Denver.
"We are excited to have such a strong group of regions for the 2020 Games. Each market offers a remarkable connection to professional cycling, an ideal landscape for competitive racing, and a strong commitment to bringing unique and engaging events to their communities," said Lucy Diaz, CEO of RPM Events Group, LLC.
"Each partner is also aligned with our mission to advance the status of women in sports, and we are excited to work together to build programs around each race stage that celebrate athletes and engage the community.
Specific route details have not been announced, but the 2020 edition of the Colorado Classic will begin on August 27 at Snowmass Village, about 200 miles west of Denver. Last year's opening stage was held in Steamboat Springs, and organizers say the peloton can expect a dynamic course for the first stage, with screaming descents, punchy hills, and some challenging big climbs.
Stage 2 will take place on August 28 in Avon. Organizers have announced that this year's stage will be a hybrid of a fast, flat criterium and a mountain stage with gradients up to 14%, similar to the 2019 stage.
Stage 3 will take place on August 29 in Boulder, a change from last year when it was held in Golden. This is the first time since 2014 that Boulder, a cycling battleground, has hosted a pro race stage. Organizers say they have designed a route that can be enjoyed by racers of all types. The course is 14.5 km of undulating gravel road with one steep climb and a possible sprint finish.
The Colorado Classic will be held in Denver on August 30 for the finale. The peloton will compete a short circuit race with a sprinter-friendly finish in Denver.
According to a press release, the full route, including start/finish locations, mileage, laps, elevation changes, sprints, Queen of the Mountains (QOM) climb, and other important details for riders and spectators will be announced in the coming months. This year, the Colorado Classic will again offer free TV streaming coverage of the race from start to finish, showcasing the world-class race and its surroundings.
Last year, Chloe Dygert won all four stages of the Colorado Classic to take the overall win.
