Michael Woods (EF Pro Cycling) crashed on Thursday during the Paris-Nice stage 5, breaking his femur. Woods will be transported to a hospital in Lyon, France, where he will undergo surgery to treat the fracture, according to a team announcement.
"He was immediately transported to a hospital in Lyon, France, where tests confirmed a closed fracture of the right femur. He will undergo surgery this evening in Lyon to repair the injury. Woods will return to Girona, Spain, following the surgery.
Woods crashed during the 227 km race between Gana and La Côte St. Andre, which was won by Niccolò Bonifazio.
The crash occurred with 45 km to go, and although television footage did not show the crash, the rider was later shown lying on the ground beside the road in pain. He was awake and able to communicate with the medic, who pointed to his right leg or buttock.
"Our hearts go out to Mike, his friends and family. We will work with Mike every step of the way as he recovers from this injury."
EF Pro Cycling also lost American Lawson Craddock, who was also forced to abandon Paris-Nice on Thursday, according to a team press release.
"Due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus, he was taken to the finish by ambulance, per ASO protocol. Team doctors were in Woods and Lyon, but ASO medical officials determined that Craddock did not meet the criteria to be tested for the coronavirus.
Craddock will return to his European base in Girona, Spain, on Friday.
Tejay Van Garderen also left the race after not starting stage 5 in Ghana. The American decided to return home early before President Donald Trump's coronavirus travel ban began.
