Paris-Nice will be the final stage on Saturday, but riders are concerned about the spread of the coronavirus and are frustrated that the race will continue, with Romain Bardet saying that "nothing makes sense anymore."
AG2R La Mondiale's Bardet went on the attack on stage 6 to escape the reality of Paris-Nice continuing as the coronavirus pandemic continues and the entire country, including France, is closed to contain the spread of the virus.
Race organizer ASO confirmed that Paris-Nice would end after the mountain stage from Nice to Valdebreure-la-Cormiane on Saturday, but there was growing frustration among teams and riders.
Bardet told French media after the stage, "When nothing makes sense anymore, it's better to get caught up in the madness around you and do what you want."
"I didn't understand why the race went on today. When everyone is trying to stop the spread of the virus, we feel out of place on our bikes."
"I don't understand why the race was held today.
The teams reportedly decided 11-5 to continue racing in Paris-Nice despite the coronavirus crisis, but Bahrain McLaren decided to return home, putting the safety and health of its riders and staff first. At the finish line in Apt, the Israeli Startup Nation also decided to cancel the race and return home.
"I lament the lack of unity in the peloton," he said.
"What on earth does it mean, especially to the other racers? They are running little races as if nothing is happening. It's very strange."
Bardet made it clear that he is not interested in postponing the Giro d'Italia or thinking about a new race calendar. He understands the broader issues.
"Nothing surprises me in 2020. He is particularly concerned about his general health.
"We may have a new calendar in a few days, but we still don't know how the pandemic will develop. That's what worries me. We think the worst is still definitely coming."
"Should we get on the tool or not?" it is impossible to say.
