Coronavirus: World Champion Mads Pedersen Leaves Paris-Nice

World champion Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) abandoned Paris-Nice before the end of Saturday's race. Pedersen missed the start of stage 7, citing his country's measures against the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Pedersen represented his Trek teammates on numerous stages during his week in France. Trek leader Vincenzo Nibali is in sixth place overall, 1:18 behind the leader, ahead of the final day.

"As a team, we have always said we would respect the authorities in this emergency," Pedersen said. My country has asked all Danish citizens to return home as soon as possible, so in agreement with the team, we will not start this morning in order to respect this decision." [It is sad to leave my teammates just before the final stage, but I believe that respecting the decision of the authorities is what we must do. I think the last few days of racing have brought relief to many cycling fans"

Upon returning to Paris-Nice, Israel Startup Nation pulled the remaining three players overnight. Tom Van Asbroeck, Nils Pollitt, and Yente Biermans were on their way home.

"We had a firm policy to continue racing as long as the local health authorities believed it was safe," team manager Kjell Carlström said in a statement.

"However, due to the escalating crisis and our policy of riders having the final say, we feel that the most responsible decision at this time is to cancel the race."
