Coronavirus: Redlands Bicycle Classic Joins U.S. Race Cancellation List

Organizers of the Redlands Bicycle Classic in Southern California have decided to cancel the event for the season, just days after saying they were closely monitoring the ongoing Covid-19 coronavirus situation but had not cancelled the race.

In a statement sent to the media late Friday night, members of the Redlands Bicycle Classic organizing committee said that the 36th edition of the event, which was scheduled for April 22-26 and would have been the third event on USA Cycling's 2020 Pro Road Tour calendar He stated that he was "firmly committed" to the event.

"Unfortunately, the risks associated with the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to increase, leading to a decision that, while we believe is appropriate under these unique circumstances, will undoubtedly disappoint many," Redlands Bicycle said Mark Shaw, Executive Director of the Cicle Classic.

"In light of the latest information, projected timeline, expert analysis, and in consultation with the leadership of the host cities of Redlands, Highlands, and Yucaipa, we have jointly made the decision not to host the 2020 Redlands Bicycle Classic.

"Ultimately, the health and well-being of everyone involved in this event, including the citizens of our local communities, led to this difficult decision."

Earlier in the week, organizers of the Tour of the Gila, scheduled for April 29-May 3 in Silver City, New Mexico, canceled the race, as did several USA Critz events.

More cancellations are expected in the near future, which could affect the selection process for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but the future of the event is also in question.

Meanwhile, the show assured race fans, the host community, volunteers, teams, and athletes that the event will return next year.

"We appreciate your understanding of our decision, as COVID-19 continues to impact the lives of people around the world.

"The lives of those affected by this outbreak are far more important than our event. So please keep them in your thoughts and prayers." See you next year in Redlands."
