Grupama-FDJ's Thibaut Pinot said he was satisfied with his fifth place overall in Paris-Nice, which ended Saturday, one day earlier than originally planned due to the coronavirus crisis.
"If I had been told before the race that I would take fifth overall in Paris-Nice, I would have done so," Pinot told French newspaper L'Equipe on Sunday.
"Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic, winner of the final stage) dominated the rest, as he has since the start of the season. [Meanwhile, Max Schachmann of Bora-Hansgrohe won the opening stage and then held on to his lead to take the overall title.
"I'm happy," said Pinot. "Especially after the bad feeling and conditions at the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var.
Pinot won the 2019 edition of the small, four-day French stage race, but only finished seventh overall, 2:22 behind dominant overall winner Quintana two weeks ago.
Pinot had intended to target the Tour de France again this summer, but with the race being canceled or postponed, one can only assume that anything can happen this season. However, with races being cancelled and postponed, Pinot can only wonder what will happen throughout the season.
"Now it's about resting and getting back on track for the "second half" of the season," Pino said.
"We had a high altitude training camp [before the season] and have been giving it our all since mid-January. I had a good race and now I need to rest."
"It's even worse for the athletes who haven't raced yet," he continued, referring to the cancellation and postponement of many events.
"I've been 'lucky.' But let's see how long this lasts," Pinot said, referring to the mandatory rest due to the coronavirus.
"Hopefully things will be under control as soon as possible."
