British Cycling suspends all competition until at least April 30

British Cycling will suspend all activities until at least April 30 due to the coronavirus outbreak; all races and sports held in the UK, including the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Manchester on April 18-19, coaching courses will be postponed or cancelled.

British Cycling's announcement comes after the British government announced Monday night that it would recommend against unnecessary contact and travel to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes the flu-like illness Covid-19. According to the latest data, more than 1,500 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in the UK.

"This decision was made following Prime Minister Boris Johnson's caution against unnecessary travel and contact with others, to take the necessary steps to protect the health and welfare of riders, officials, volunteers and spectators and to reduce the risk of additional strain on emergency services at a time of great trial." Julie Harrington, chief executive of British Cycling, said.

." We fully understand and appreciate the financial, social, and community impact of this suspension.

The coronavirus outbreak has led to the postponement or cancellation of races around the world. The Giro d'Italia, Milan-San Remo, Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour of the Basque Country, Tour de Romandie, and Gent-Wevelgem have been postponed or cancelled, and the remaining spring classic races are also expected to be cancelled.

In Spain, the current state of emergency prohibits all outdoor sports activities, including cycling, while in Italy only professional athletes are allowed to train outdoors.

In a statement released Tuesday, British Cycling said, "As guidance to professional athletes and those participating in the World Class Program, training, including group activities, can continue."
