Tour of Flanders Cancelled Due to Coronavirus Concerns

Organizers of the Tour of Flanders have made the long-awaited decision to cancel the April 5 race.

Flanders was on the chopping block as pro cycling continues to deal with the Covid-19 coronavirus, following the same spring monuments Milan-San Remo, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Paris-Roubaix.

"Tonight, the federal government has imposed a number of additional measures in the fight against the Covid-19 virus," race organizer Flanders Classic said in an update posted on its website. 'Furthermore, the deadline for these measures has been extended until April 5. This means that there is no longer any possibility for Flanders Classics to host the Tour of Flanders on the scheduled dates."

Thomas van den Spiegel, CEO of Flanders Classics, said that new government regulations made it impossible to hold the race on April 5. 'Of course, there are more important issues right now than bike racing.'

"We hope that in the short term we will succeed in creating an environment in which normal daily life can resume."
